Portraits of their Compendium Tithe, 2016

The final piece of my graduating year.

Each participant was tasked with a two week period in which they collected any and all small debris they came into contact with; objects they held in their hands for just a moment, things they would have otherwise not taken notice of in their day to day lives.

There is a tradition, in Northern Ontario, where in the winter we make and light ‘ice candles’, which resemble lanterns glowing softly out amongst the snow. In my community they are displayed in the cemetery, among other places in town, placed as reminders of those who have passed. Taking inspiration from these, each portrait within this series, encased a moment in time for each of the participants, describing who they were, through the debris they left behind.
